What is a breastfeeding medicine doctor?
A breastfeeding medicine doctor first completes medical school and residency (often in pediatrics, ob/gyn, or family medicine), and then seeks out additional education, training and experience in breastfeeding and lactation. A breastfeeding medicine doctor is uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat lactation related problems including nipple pain, breast infection, low supply, over supply, etc. Dr. Berman combines her expertise as a pediatrician focused on breastfeeding medicine, IBCLC, and mom to fully address your concerns and help you achieve your breastfeeding goals.
Dr. Berman is able to diagnose tongue-ties. She will assess your baby's mouth, including how well the tongue is able to move and the quality of your baby's suck. This will be taken into account in addition to how your baby is able to latch and feed. Every case is individual and dependent on the interplay between mom's and baby's anatomy and how they relate to baby's ability to feed at the breast. Dr. Berman will work with you and your baby to maximize an effective, non-painful latch and good milk transfer. If frenotomy (tongue-tie release) is determined to be the best course of action, Dr. Berman will refer you to a specialist.
What is lifestyle medicine?
Lifestyle medicine utilizes an evidenced-based approach to optimize wellness and prevent, treat, and sometimes reverse disease through lifestyle interventions that focus on healthy eating, movement, sleep, stress management, positive social relationships, and a connection to nature. Dr. Berman's goal is to help you raise healthy kids with habits that will serve them throughout their lives. She employs a family-based and supportive, judgement-free approach to help you and your child find goals that are meaningful to you.
Dr. Berman is board certified in general pediatrics. However, this is not a general pediatrics practice, and Dr. Berman is not accepting general pediatrics patients. Dr. Berman will work closely with your pediatrician to take care of you and your child with regard to lactation or lifestyle medicine.
